- Hunter Mountain .. New York .... Favorite day trip from New York .. challenging terrain,
good food, gritty New York City style atomosphere :)
- Sunday River .. Maine .... Great skiing, Great scenery, Great service! 8 mountain peaks with an octillion number of trails means you'll always find new terrain to ski no matter
how long your stay is! A First Class resort where the customer is King/Queen !!!
- Whiteface Mountain .. New York .... site of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Bask in the glory
of Steve Mahre's Silver medal slalom run (damn that trail is *steep*!!!), and re-live the improbable Gold medal by the US Hockey
team in nearby Lake Placid. Perhaps if you look close enough, you'll see a "Coke-Bottle" eyed Eddie the Eagle practicing for
his own claim to glory for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan. Heck, even ski-god Alberto Tomba shows up here occasionally!
- Dynastar Skis .... HOT racing skis ..... "S9" slalom ..... "G9" giant slalom ..
........ and my baby, the all terrain high performance "X8 Coupe"
- Rossignol Skis .... my new baby, "7SK Course" slalom .. the
yellow & black "Bumble-Bee" that stings World Cup and Olympic race courses into submission. Lots of Gold Medals from this
crop of ski-meisters :)
- Authentic Snow Reports .... the real thing, no filters or "spins"
- Sugarloaf USA .. Maine .... The only above tree-line skiing in the East,
they got a trail that winds it's way 10 miles from top to bottom .. (try doing *that* non-stop!)
- Killington .. Vermont .... 6 mountains, 140+ trails, hopping nightlife,
opens early October, closes in June (June 7th this year!) .. the undisputed king of Vermont skiing
- Aspen .. Colorado .... Winter playground of the rich & famous, ... blah-blah-blah ... in spite of the glitz there are 4 tremendous mountains with trails ranging from meek to downright
*frightening* !!! My favourite is a peaceful little ravine spiked with bumps called "Garrett's Gultch", but you have to descend a cliff to get in there :)
Then there is the world famous Big Burn at SnowMass, a veritable playground featuring acres of wide open terrain ... cruise a
bit from the top -- jump into the moguls for a spell, then pop out again -- dance through a patch of trees -- stop, lay down a
blanket and enjoy a sunny picnic lunch -- you could spend a whole day on Big Burn and not even scratch the surface of
SnowMass !!
And I haven't even mentioned the other 3 mountains -- ButterMilk, so-called "beginner" area, but worthy nontheless for their
top-flight ski school and variety of terrain -- Aspen Highlands, with tough double-black-diamond trails and rustic outback
"go-to-hell" attitude -- and the daddy of them all, Ajax Mountain, towering over Aspen town .. where the glitterati and us regular
folk rub elbows and watch in awe as AJ Kitt and Pirman Zirbriggen plunge down "Aztec" at speeds approaching 80mph !!!
